Entering the quarter-litre adventure-tourer motorcycle market in Malaysia is the 2023 Modenas Kawasaki Versys-X 250, priced at RM24,900. Pricing does not include road tax, insurance or registration and there are two colour options – Metallic Flat Spark Black and Candy Lime Green.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled parallel-twin displacing 249 cc, claimed to pump out 33.5 hp at 10,500 rpm and 21.7 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. This is not surprising, since the Versys X-250 uses much the same engine as the Z250 ABS (RM19,500) and Ninja 250 ABS (RM20,500).

Designed as a commuter and light adventure-tourer, the Versys X-250 is optimised for low end torque, coming with twin throttle valves. Measuring 28 mm in diameter, the primary throttle valve is supplemented by a larger secondary valve that measure 40.2 mm, to allow for greater airflow at higher engine speeds.

Power goes to the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox and slipper and assist clutch that reduces effort at the lever. Compared to the Ninja 250 and Z250’s 14-litre fuel tank, the Versys X-250 gets a big bike sized 17-litre unit.

Spoked wheel sizing on the Versys X-250 is 19-inches in front and 17-inches at the rear, shod with 100/90 and 130/80 rubber. Braking is done with single hydraulic discs front and rear, with dual-piston callipers while ABS is omitted.

Suspension in front is non-adjustable telescopic forks with 130 mm travel and a preload-adjustable monoshock in the rear with 148 mm of travel. Weighing in at 181 kg, the Versys-X comes with 180 mm of ground clearance and seat height is set at 815 mm.

In Malaysia, primary competition for the Versys CX-250 comes from the KTM Adventure 250, priced at RM24,000. Other market rivals below the RM20,000 price point are the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX at RM18,000, the Benelli TRK 251 at RM13,888 and the KTNS RS3 at RM12,800.

A statement from the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) confirms the Drag Bike National ET Record Championship 2023 Road Tour is a non-sanctioned race event. Expressing regret and condolences to the family over the death of motorcycle drag racer Hattem Rashdi, MAM said the event held in Pekan, Pahang, did not receive any form of sanction.

Reiterating that motorsports is dangerous, organisers of motorsports events in Malaysia are reminded safety regulations and protocol should be followed at all times. Motorsports events sanctioned by MAM follow FIA and FIM guidelines as well as National Competition Rules (NCR) with clear instructions to event organisers.

This includes circuit preparation for safety, marshals and race officials, medical teams and insurance coverage for racers, spectators, officials and organisers. Additionally, the Ministry of Youth and Sport, police, the Malaysian Sports Commissioner and MAM are in discussion to streamline and expedite the administration and regulations regarding motorsports events in Malaysia.

Hailing from Vietnam, the Tuscany 150 follows the classic Italian scooter styling closely, and comes with a two-year or 20,000 km warranty against manufacturing defects. Power for the Tuscany comes from an air-cooled, single-cylinder engine.

With the 149.6 cc engine fed by EFI, power for the Tuscany is rated at 14.74 hp at 8,000 rpm with a peak torque of 11.4 Nm at 5,500 rpm. Power goes to the rear wheel via CVT gearbox and belt drive.

Head-up displays are a genuinely useful piece of modern car technology, and over the years, they’ve trickled down even to more affordable models. They do have genuine safety benefits, providing information to the driver that can be accessed without their eyes being taken off the road. The thing is, motorcycle riders might just benefit from this even more. Here, though, is one way they can.

BMW Motorrad has released its ‘ConnectedRide Smartglasses’, which can display your speed, current gear, the speed limit and navigation data via a Bluetooth connection to the BMW Motorrad Connected App on your smartphone. The rider can decide what information is shown (there are reduced and detailed nav options, for instance), and change the position of the HUD, either before setting off or on the move using the multifunction controller on the bike’s handlebars.

Fully juiced, the lithium-ion battery will last for 10 hours, so even if you have a long road trip planned, you should be fine. Two sets of lenses are included – one transparent, and one tinted.

The Smartglasses “can be adapted to fit numerous helmets and face shapes,” BMW says, and there’s also an adaptor for those who wear glasses. They can also operate in temperatures ranging from -10 to +50 degrees centigrade.

All of this sounds wonderful, but it does come at quite a price – €690.00, which is about a tenner under £600 going by current exchange rates. In Japan last year, the HUD-equipped Shoei Opticson debuted with an RRP that was the equivalent of just over £800, although at the time the company said it had no plans to sell it elsewhere.

]]>

Entering the European scooter market is the 2023 Kymco KRV 200, which the Taiwanese manufacturer says is the first of a new generation utilising its Power Transmission Module (PTM). With PTM, the KRV 200 takes maxi scooter technology down to the smaller displacement scooter class.

Unlike the usual small displacement scooters with the engine and CVT transmission integrated as part of the swingarm, the KRV 200 mounts those components in the frame. Final drive to the rear wheel uses a belt, like maxi scooters in the 500 cc and above category.

The benefit of PTM is a reduction in unsprung weight, giving better handling characteristics to the KRV 200. This also gives the KRV 200 a 50/50 weight distribution between front and rear wheels with a low center of gravity.

Power for the KRV 200 comes from a 175 cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder, four-valve, liquid-cooled engine fed by EFI. Power is rated at 17 hp at 8,000 rpm with 15.6 Nm of torque at 6,250 rpm.

Suspension is done with 33 mm diameter telescopic forks and a preload-adjustable monoshock in the rear. Forbearing the KRV 200 gets hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, with 27- mm diameter and 240 mm diameter rear discs and two-wheel ABS is standard equipment.

Standard equipment also includes traction control, which is switchable by the rider using the left handlebar pod control. Wheel sizing for the KRV 200 is 13-inches, shod with 110/70 front and 130/70 rear tyres.

LED lighting is used throughout on the KRV 200 with and LCD panel displaying the necessary information inside the cockpit. A storage compartment large enough to hold a single full-face helmet is found under the seat.

Other riding conveniences include two USB charging sockets, found in the front cowl and in the storage compartment as well as keyless start. Weight for the KRV 200 is listed at 143 kg, with 7.4-litres of fuel in the tank and seat height is set at 795 mm.
